I am Andrew Vincent, a former BBC journalist and university lecturer in broadcast journalism.
My first book, 'Mum and Dad; remembrance and revenge,' is an examination of growing up an only child to dysfunctional parents against the backdrop of social change in the 1960s, '70s and 80s.
There is a rolling cast of rude mechanicals: free 99s mask an affair with the ice cream man, Baroness Rosina von Kuhne runs a nursery with guns on the walls, Cousin John the secret millionaire, Uncle Bernard the thieving milkman (who was both dad’s brother and his father-in-law), Stan the Flasher, the Ringy-a-Bill Man and Jane Fonda providing sex education.
This book is not a misery memoir, nor a 'who remembers Spangles' nostalgia-fest.
‘Mum & Dad’ tells the feuds, ambitions and disappointments of a dysfunctional family from the viewpoint of a bewildered kid. Writing with humour and reflection, I reach back to trace the events which shape us, even before we are born, and I explore how a revelation changes everything we think we know.
I am a brain injury survivor who volunteers helping others adjust to their own life-changing conditions. I have lived experience of personality change and the resilience needed to thrive after two strokes, a heart attack and an amputation.
I am available to talk or write about any of the issues raised in Mum and Dad as well as brain injury and mental health. As a former BBC broadcaster I am a confident and engaging speaker, whether live, recorded, on stage or for print or online interviews.
Thank you for taking the time to look at what I do. I like engaging with readers so please feel free to drop me a line.
